Proverbs 29:3-4 (ESV)
3 He who loves wisdom makes his father glad,
but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
4 By justice a king builds up the land,
but he who exacts gifts tears it down.
The wise son loves truth, and by putting into practice the wisdom he’s gained, keeps himself far from the wicked. The obedient son’s father is full of joy, grateful that the son listened to his instruction and thankful that the son will have a blessed life, free from the baggage and scars which accompany sinful choices. The parents trust the godly son with no fear of how he will manage the family resources. As a son can ruin his family through foolish choices, so can a king destroy a nation by his wicked decisions. The king should be trusted to advocate for the weaker members of the community. The ruler who receives bribes, willing to pervert justice for financial gain, destroys the nation. When the land is attacked, the broken people have little desire to defend their unjust leaders and the community falls. If you are feeling weary today, don’t give up. Wisdom will never let you down.
