Proverbs 29:1-2 (ESV)
1 He who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck,
will suddenly be broken beyond healing.
2 When the righteous increase, the people rejoice,
but when the wicked rule, the people groan.
Listening to wisdom is necessary for life. The one who rejects the wise counsel offered to her by the Proverbs and the Scripture will be cut off.The term “stiff necked” occurs throughout the Old Testament, describing an animal that is stubborn, unsubmissive, defiant, and rejects the yoke placed upon its neck in order to work the land. In the same way, a person who stiffens her neck refuses to heed advice. Corrupt leadership creates misery within communities, and when leaders are self- seeking, the people are broken. But when good and kind rulers rise to power, there is joy and hope in the land. There will come a time for all who are hardhearted when the chance to repent is no longer available. The fool who refuses the Lord’s instruction and is determined to do things her way will eventually reach the point of hopelessness. Why not soften your neck and fully submit yourself to God’s desires today?
