Proverbs 28:17-18 (ESV)
17 If one is burdened with the blood of another,
he will be a fugitive until death;
let no one help him.
18 Whoever walks in integrity will be delivered,
but he who is crooked in his ways will suddenly fall.
God created humans in his image and graced each one with a conscience. Though we can harden our hearts to the sense of fairness God has placed within us, most are sensitive toward the internal accusations which arise when we sin, bearing witness to our violation of God’s law. The one who has taken the life of an innocent man is tormented. The deceptive person will land in a pit. But God will help those who are devoted to him, following his ways and trusting in his goodness. God gifts us with consciences to convict us, so that we might repent. There will be times when those we love undergo spiritual struggles as the Holy Spirit exposes their guilt, leaving them broken before the Lord. Although tempting, it’s not always right to rescue them from their spiritual pain, and possibly get in the way of the Lord. God’s comfort is for those who turn from sin to Jesus.
