Proverbs 28:15-16 (ESV)

15 Like a roaring lion or a charging bear

is a wicked ruler over a poor people.

16 A ruler who lacks understanding is a cruel oppressor,

but he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days.

An evil ruler uses his position of authority for selfish and unjust personal gain. A roaring lion is ferocious, and when hungry, it will do whatever necessary to satisfy its desires. A charging bear aggressively attacks without warning, overwhelming its victims. The wicked leader is as terrifying as these two beasts, plundering the poor without compassion. The unwise ruler foolishly exploits his power, preying upon those who look to him for protection and provision. But the honest and upright leader makes choices for the good of the community. His deeds will endure, even into the life to come. Just as rulers leave a legacy, either of terror or compassion, so do we. If those you have authority over were to summarize your leadership today, would they characterize you as faithful and kind, or harsh and exacting? How will you be remembered in ten, or even a hundred years from now?
