Proverbs 6:28-29 (ESV)
28 Or can one walk on hot coals
and his feet not be scorched?
29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
none who touches her will go unpunished.
The warning about adultery continues with another vivid picture. The father asks whether a man can walk on hot coals without scorching his feet. The answer is obvious. No one expects to step onto burning coals and remain unharmed. The Hebrew word translated “hot coals” is gahal. It refers to a glowing fragment of coal left from a fire, smoldering with intense heat. Charcoal can be useful when it cooks food on a barbecue or melts metal in a forge, but if a person steps on it, the result is certain. His feet will be burned.
In the same way, the one who pursues adultery will be burned. Earlier the father warned about carrying fire next to the chest. Now he speaks of walking on coals. Both images make the same point. It is foolish, even senseless, to think a person can play with sexual sin and escape its consequences.
The New Testament gives the same warning. In 1 Thessalonians 4:3-6, Paul writes that believers are to control their own bodies in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like those who do not know God. He adds that no one should “transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things.” The Greek word translated “avenger” is ekdikos. It refers to one who carries out justice and punishes wrongdoing. Sexual immorality is never hidden from God, and just as morning follows evening, his judgment follows those who violate sexual boundaries.
Another sobering statement is added: “none who touches her will go unpunished.” The Hebrew word translated “touches” is naga, meaning to make physical contact. Some may try to soften their sexual sin by saying that they did not go all the way. They may claim they only took a few liberties or crossed a few boundaries. Yet the text refuses to minimize the seriousness of adultery. The consequences may come through a jealous spouse or the direct discipline of God himself. But the warning remains clear. No one walks across burning coals without being burned.
We must remember that God sees both our outward actions and our hidden thoughts. Because of our fallen nature, very few people can claim a spotless record when it comes to sexual purity. Yet the gospel offers real hope. Though sexual sin carries consequences, Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sin before a holy and righteous God. If you know that your record is not clean, turn to Christ today. Confess your sin to him. He willingly bore the punishment our sins deserve. Ask God to cleanse you through Christ and to make your heart pure. He is able to make sinners white as snow.
