Proverbs 6:14-15 (ESV)
14 with perverted heart devises evil,
continually sowing discord;
15 therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly;
in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.
The description of the worthless and wicked man continues. His heart is perverted. It is twisted at the source. The Hebrew word translated “perverted” is tahpukah. It speaks of deceit, moral crookedness, or a deliberate bend away from what is right. It should not surprise us, then, that such a heart devises evil. He does not stumble into sin by accident. He plans it.
The same diagnosis was given before the flood: “The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5). When the heart is corrupt, the thoughts and actions that follow are corrupt. Yet God did not allow that rebellion to continue unchecked, and he will not allow this kind either.
His evil behavior begins within but does not stay hidden. He is “continually sowing discord.” The Hebrew word translated “discord” is medan, meaning strife or bitter conflict. The word “continually” reveals a settled pattern, not a momentary lapse. The image of sowing is also intentional. A farmer plants what he wants to see grow. If this man scatters seeds of strife, it is because he desires division to take root. He fractures relationships. He disrupts even the people of God. The Lord loves unity among his people and stands opposed to the one who tears it apart.
For a time, he may appear to prosper. His voice may gain a hearing. Others may be persuaded. But his end is certain. Actions carry consequences. “Calamity will come upon him suddenly.” Just as judgment fell in Noah’s day, so it will fall on the unrepentant. His ruin will not unfold slowly. It will also be swift. “In a moment he will be broken beyond healing.” This is final devastation. No recovery. First Thessalonians 5:2-3 echoes the same warning of sudden destruction upon those who feel secure. In the end, separation from God awaits the unrepentant. And so, the son is cautioned not to associate with such a man.
Be forewarned. You will encounter this person. He may present himself as discerning or spiritually serious, yet he quietly criticizes and recruits others into suspicion. Guard your heart. Do not lend your ear to gossip or subtle slander. Distance yourself from the divisive person before you are drawn into his schemes. Many recognize his selfish ambition only after harm has been done. But God sees. He will not allow the lover of discord to prevail forever. He will bring an abrupt end to destructive ways, in this life or in the judgment to come.
