Proverbs 7:21-22 (ESV)

21 With much seductive speech she persuades him;

with her smooth talk she compels him.

22 All at once he follows her,

as an ox goes to the slaughter,

or as a stag is caught fast

The father brings his account to a close by describing how the encounter ends. The young and simple man was no match for what he faced. The adulteress is practiced and persuasive. He is inexperienced and careless. What began as curiosity now becomes captivity. Because he had not prepared his heart with truth, when temptation came, he lacked the wisdom needed to keep him from his catastrophic choice.

Her weapon is her speech. “With much seductive speech she persuades him.” The Hebrew word translated “seductive speech” is leqach, meaning teaching or instruction. In other places it refers to sound doctrine (Proverbs 4:2), but here it is distorted. This is false teaching dressed up as something desirable. Her words may feel right to the foolish, but they are not true. This reminds us that not all instruction is good. We must evaluate every message by the word of God or risk being led astray.

Her words are described as smooth, and they have their intended effect. She persuades him. She compels him. What should have been resisted is now embraced. Then comes the turning point. “All at once he follows her.” The decision is immediate. Sin often works this way. There is a moment of pressure, and if we are not anchored in truth, we will give in quickly. What feels like a small choice in the moment can carry consequences for a lifetime.

The father then uses vivid imagery to expose the outcome. The man is like an ox going to the slaughter or a stag caught in a trap. Both are strong animals, yet unaware of the danger. They move forward without realizing that death is near. This is the deception of sin. It blinds, it stupefies, and it leads people to walk straight into ruin while thinking they are gaining something good or even glorious.

This passage calls us all to sober self examination. Where are you being persuaded by smooth words that do not align with Scripture? Where are you tempted to follow your desires instead of obeying what God has clearly said? There will be times when you must choose obedience simply because God has spoken. Do not wait until sin proves itself destructive. The price tag associated with even brief disobedience may remain for a lifetime.
