Proverbs 18:22-24 (ESV)
22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing
and obtains favor from the Lord.
23 The poor use entreaties,
but the rich answer roughly.
24 A man of many companions may come to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
If a man is wise, he will seek out a God-fearing wife, and a wise woman will look for a God- fearing husband. Godly character should be the most important trait required when considering a future spouse. Those who are poor have no financial means to turn to for deliverance and are fully dependent upon the Lord for help. The wealthy, on the other hand, often make riches their primary source of security and harshly refuse those who ask them to share their resources. Though one may have many friends when circumstances are going well, few friends stick around when disaster strikes. In the end, it’s not about the number of friends you have, but about the quality of those friendships. Better to have a faithful friend you can trust with your life than a hundred so-called friends you can’t even trust with your reputation.
