Proverbs 3:19-20 (ESV)

19 The LORD by wisdom founded the earth;

by understanding he established the heavens;

20 by his knowledge the deeps broke open,

and the clouds drop down the dew.

The wisdom praised throughout Proverbs is not abstract or theoretical. It is the wisdom by which the Lord created the universe. Solomon lifts our eyes from ourselves to creation so we might grasp the weight of what he is saying. Everything we see exists because God acted with wisdom, understanding, and knowledge.

The Lord founded the earth by wisdom. The Hebrew verb translated as founded, yasad, means to lay a foundation or set a firm base. The earth did not come into being by chance or trial and error but rests on a foundation intentionally laid by our wise Creator. The heavens were established by understanding. The verb kun, translated as established, carries the idea of fixing, determining, or making something secure. What God made is not accidental. He ordered the universe with purpose and stability.

From the earth to the heavens, from the depths below to the clouds above, God’s knowledge orders all things. His work in creation is complete and comprehensive. In his wisdom, the waters below and the moisture above together sustain life. Even the patterns we often overlook testify to God’s careful design. Creation holds together because it is ruled by the knowledge of its Maker.

The New Testament clarifies that Jesus is God and that he is the one who founded and established the universe by wisdom. John 1:1-3 teaches that all things were made through Jesus, and without him nothing was made that has been made. Colossians 1:17 adds that in Jesus all things hold together. From microscopic molecules to majestic mountains, the Lord who created the universe remains personally involved, upholding everything by his power. He sustains all that he has made.

If the Lord accomplished the wonders of creation through wisdom, what might that same wisdom accomplish in the life of a woman who seeks it? If wisdom was sufficient to establish the heavens and sustain the earth, it is sufficient to guide our steps. To ignore God’s wisdom is not independence but folly. The wise response is humility before our Creator. Ask him for insight. Seek his wisdom in his word. Trust that the God who governs the universe knows how to direct your life. Those who take hold of his wisdom will not be disappointed, for it comes from the One who founded and established all that he declared good.
