Proverbs 2:6-8

6 For the LORD gives wisdom;

from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;

7 he stores up sound wisdom for the upright;

he is a shield to those who walk in integrity,

8 guarding the paths of justice

and watching over the way of his saints.

Wisdom has only one source. It does not originate in experience, education, intuition, or age. The Lord gives wisdom. There is no rival authority and no competing voice. Every form of true knowledge and understanding finds its beginning in him.

This wisdom comes from his mouth. God is not silent. He has spoken. Jesus affirms this reality in Matthew 4:4 when he declares, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” We do not gain wisdom by looking inward, but by listening upward. God has chosen to make his voice known through Scripture, and it is there that his people are instructed, corrected, encouraged, and comforted by truth.

The Lord not only gives wisdom, he stores it up. This language conveys abundance. God possesses an inexhaustible supply of sound wisdom, reserved for the upright. He withholds nothing that is necessary for faithful obedience from those who walk in the fear of the Lord. To know the Lord is to learn how life is meant to be lived. His wisdom equips believers to navigate temptation, suffering, decisions, and relationships with discernment and restraint.

Those who seek and submit to God’s wisdom are not left exposed. The Lord himself becomes their shield. A shield does not remove the battle, but it protects the one who carries it. In the same way, listening to and applying God’s instruction guards the obedient disciple from spiritual harm. God’s wisdom deflects what would otherwise wound or even destroy. His people are preserved not because life becomes easier, but because their steps are directed by truth. The paths of righteousness are also the paths of safety.

God is described as guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. To watch over speaks of careful attention, active protection, and ongoing care. God does not merely provide instruction and then withdraw. He remains intimately involved in the lives of those who belong to him. Their ways are known. Their steps are seen. Their obedience is never unnoticed.

The Lord ensures the spiritual safety of his people in a crooked and dark world. Nothing in their lives is accidental. Nothing escapes his notice. If you are feeling unsettled, uncertain, or afraid, remember who holds your life. If you know the Lord, you are not unprotected. You are in his hand and under his wing, the safest place in the universe.
