Proverbs 1:32-33 (ESV)

32 For the simple are killed by their turning away,

and the complacency of fools destroys them;

33 but whoever listens to me will dwell secure

and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.

After calling, warning, and pleading, wisdom now speaks with clarity and finality. The simple are destroyed by their turning away. The Hebrew word translated “turning away” is meshuvah. It is translated “backsliding” elsewhere in Scripture. It describes someone who leaned in for a moment but no longer does. Interest in the things of God fades. Attention drifts. Obedience is postponed. What begins as quiet neglect ends in spiritual death.

The fool meets the same end, but by a different road. His danger is complacency. He is at rest and at ease. He wants comfort and enjoyment now. Confident that nothing is wrong, he shrugs off warnings and dismisses urgency. Life feels stable, so he assumes he is safe. But this security is imagined. Both the simple and the fool are lulled into ruin by a sense of ease that convinces them no danger is near. Their confidence is misplaced, and their end is death and destruction.

Then wisdom draws a sharp contrast. “But whoever listens to me.” Listening leads to real security. Not the kind of calm that depends on favorable circumstances, but a settled confidence anchored in truth. The one who listens will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster. This is not a promise of a trouble free life. It is a promise that trouble will never have the final word.

The wise do not turn away from the voice of God. They turn toward it. They listen to Scripture and submit to its instruction. They do not place their hope in what can be taken away. Beauty wanes. Popularity declines. Pleasure disappoints. Riches fade. Power slips through the fingers. Those who trust in such things will eventually find themselves exposed and empty. Those who trust the Lord will never be put to shame.

Proverbs 1 closes with both a warning and a call. Many rest in a sense of security that is thin and temporary, built on comfort, stability, or routine rather than obedience. Wisdom exposes that kind of safety for what it is. Only those who listen to God dwell truly secure. Do not confuse ease with safety or comfort with faithfulness. Listen to wisdom today, obey her voice, and walk forward without dread, anchored in a security the world cannot give and cannot take away.
