Proverbs 4:14-16 (ESV)

14 Do not enter the path of the wicked,

and do not walk in the way of the evil.

15 Avoid it; do not go on it;

turn away from it and pass on.

16 For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong;

they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble.

The father turns from describing the way of the righteous to exposing the way of the wicked. One road leads to life. The other must be shunned without hesitation. The way of the wicked ends in remorse, regret, ruin, and ultimately death. Though it may look attractive and alluring, it overpromises and underdelivers every time. In the end, it leaves its traveler morally depleted, spiritually bankrupt, inwardly lifeless, and profoundly empty.

As the son moves through the course of life, he will inevitably come upon the path of the wicked. When he does, six urgent commands meet him. Do not enter. Do not walk. Avoid it. Do not go on it. Turn away from it. Pass on. The repetition is deliberate and forceful. There is no room for curiosity, negotiation, or delay. That path must be avoided at any cost.

For many, stepping onto the path of the wicked begins quietly and in secret. The father speaks with sober realism. You will see it. And when you do, you must not go there. The heart will quickly supply its excuses. No one will know. This is not hurting anyone. I work hard. I am exhausted. I deserve a break. I am not appreciated. I will only linger for a moment and then step back. When you encounter the wicked way, pass by it. Keep moving, and even if the pull feels strong, do not slow your pace. Run if necessary.

The father explains further. The wicked cannot sleep unless they have done wrong. They are unsettled until they have led someone else into sin. Where the path of wisdom offers peace and safety, the wicked are tethered to corruption. Sin does not soothe. It agitates. It demands more. Evil prefers the cover of darkness, but its power does not diminish simply because it is hidden. Do not deceive yourself into thinking you can control it. To step onto the wicked path is to enter a realm of self serving isolation from what is good and life giving. It does not release its grip easily.

As you walk the path of righteousness, what beckons you to slow your steps, to look again, to remain where you do not belong? Acknowledge your vulnerabilities without excuse. Then eliminate whatever endangers your progress. The Lord Jesus spoke with clarity. If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off. If your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. He was not advocating self harm, but urgent and costly obedience. Sin cannot be handled with care. It must be severed. Be willing to take radical action. Then press on.
