Proverbs 30:21-23 (ESV)
21 Under three things the earth trembles;
under four it cannot bear up:
22 a slave when he becomes king,
and a fool when he is filled with food;
23 an unloved woman when she gets a husband,
and a maidservant when she displaces her mistress.
The author lists four things that disrupt social order on the planet.The first is a slave who comes to power. The Hebrew word used here describes not the ordinary slave, but one whom the king trusted. The slave usurped the king’s authority and set himself up as ruler over the nation. He caused the downfall of the people and could not be tolerated. The second, a fool who is rewarded with food, becomes arrogant, believing his idiotic ways are prospering. Third is an ungodly and bitter woman who is taken as a man’s wife. Last is the female servant who drives out her mistress, probably by seducing her mistress’s husband. When unqualified people end up in positions of authority, the community suffers. Do you covet the success of another woman? If so, stop and repent today. Be satisfied with what God has graced you with rather than seeking what isn’t truly yours.
