Proverbs 19:13-14 (ESV)

13 A foolish son is ruin to his father,

and a wife’s quarreling is a continual dripping of rain.

14 House and wealth are inherited from fathers,

but a prudent wife is from the Lord.

The father of a foolish son has no one to come alongside him in his old age or to manage the family’s wealth. And a complaining wife sounds like water dripping from a faulty ceiling. In ancient Israel, rooftops were made of wood and clay, and when a rainstorm struck, leaks would surely follow. The only way for a man to escape the noise was to leave his home. The household must be managed wisely, and a man is dependent upon his wife. Though marriages were arranged at the time, the good wife was a gift from God. If you are married, do you bicker with your husband? If you will be married, are you currently content to yield your desires for the benefit of your other family members? If you have a hard time getting along with family, the problem might be you. Practice godliness by choosing to look out for the needs of others today.
