Proverbs 19:7-9 (ESV)
7 All a poor man’s brothers hate him;
how much more do his friends go far from him!
He pursues them with words, but does not have them.
8 Whoever gets sense loves his own soul;
he who keeps understanding will discover good.
9 A false witness will not go unpunished,
and he who breathes out lies will perish.
By continually crying out for financial help, the one who is poor can drag down family members. And if she is a burden to her blood relatives, how much more of a nuisance is she to those who aren’t even related?! Even though she may continue to express her needs to friends and family, she gets no help. But the person who earnestly pursues God’s wisdom, living in a way consistent with the teaching of the Lord, will enjoy abundant life now and eternally. God is aware of everything said by every person. Not a single word or even thought of a word escapes his notice. The woman who lies to get out of trouble may experience momentary relief, but she will eventually deal with the consequences of her false testimony. Better to tell the truth and temporarily suffer now than to lie and permanently suffer later.
