Proverbs 26:23-25 (ESV)

23 Like the glaze covering an earthen vessel

are fervent lips with an evil heart.

24 Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips

and harbors deceit in his heart;

25 when he speaks graciously, believe him not,

for there are seven abominations in his heart;

Metallic glazes were used on ceramics to make them appear shiny and more expensive than they actually were. Flattering words operate in the same way, providing an insincere gloss that misleads the naïve. The one who uses flattery to manipulate is driven by selfish motives, hoping to gain something from her deceptive speech. A hateful heart can be cloaked in words of praise, providing a cover for the true intentions.We often recognize the mean spirit behind hurtful words, but we can be so duped by praise from others. How do you respond to flattery? Do you think logically, realizing that you really aren’t the most beautiful or talented or upright person in the world? Or do you fall for the flatterer’s scheme, showing unnatural favor to those who speak well of you? Sometimes what we want to hear doesn’t line up with the truth. Listen to those who love you enough to be honest.
