Proverbs 28:6-7 (ESV)
6 Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity
than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.
7 The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding,
but a companion of gluttons shames his father.
It is better to live an honest life and be destitute than to have even great wealth gained by deceitful means. The crooked man is doubly devious. First, he defrauds his neighbor to get more than he earned or deserves, and then, he passes himself off as blameless. Ironically, usually the poor man is the victim of the one both crooked and rich. Though the poor person may suffer now, the Day is coming when the Lord will make right every wrong. The wise son listens to and applies his father’s teaching, but the foolish son befriends reprobates, bringing shame to his family. Unless your parents are giving you ungodly advice, it’s smart to listen to them. Your mother and father probably want to see you succeed more than anyone else does. Don’t be deceived into thinking they are attempting to rip you off.
