4 An excellent wife is the crown of her husband,
but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones.
5 The thoughts of the righteous are just;
the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.
Two types of wives are contrasted: excellent and rotten. In both cases, the husband’s reputation is affected by his wife’s behavior. The God-fearing wife is like a crown upon a man’s head. She is faithful, hardworking, and manages her home with order, kindness, and generosity. She does what she can to enable her husband to serve the Lord. The ungodly wife is like a hidden source of decay. She is immoral, argumentative, and self- seeking. She makes life hard for her husband in the home and the community. Those who are right with God desire fairness, while the enemies of the Lord scheme to get whatever they can for themselves. If you are married, does God see you as an excellent wife? Do you encourage your husband? Or do you view yourself as superior to him, wishing he would get his act together? God expects wives to love their husbands, and he holds them accountable to do so.
