Proverbs 6:23-24 (ESV)

23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light,

and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,

24 to preserve you from the evil woman,

from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.

The father reminds his son that God’s commands and teaching provide a lamp and a light for the path of life. Life’s path is filled with obstacles and hidden dangers, so illumination is necessary. Without light, a traveler easily stumbles. With light, the way becomes clear. God’s instruction enables the believer to discern truth and walk safely.

Parental instruction exposes danger before it is too late. Scripture expresses the same truth in Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Here the psalmist is not asking for a full map of the future. Instead, he asks the Lord for faithful guidance in the present. These are the things he should do, and these are the things he should avoid. The light of God’s word shows where to place his foot and which direction to take each day as life unfolds.

The father also explains that “the reproofs of discipline are the way of life.” The Hebrew word translated “reproofs” is tokhaḥat. It refers to rebuke that exposes sin and calls a person back to what is right. The Hebrew word translated “discipline” is musar, which describes training that comes through correction and self control. Together these words highlight the transforming work of wise discipline. This process often requires humility and hard work. It calls us to correct our thinking, change our behavior, and refuse to give in to sinful impulses. Yet this very process leads to life.

This instruction preserves the son from the evil woman and from the smooth tongue of the adulteress. She is the wife of another man. Her actions are not merely immoral but evil. She betrays her marriage and uses flattery and persuasive speech to seduce others. Many fall because their vanity is stroked. She may whisper words that appeal to pride. You work so hard. You are so attractive. You are not appreciated the way you should be. Her speech feels affirming, but it conceals destruction. Wisdom preserves the one who puts it into practice.

An adulterous relationship has the power to ruin lives. Families collapse, careers are destroyed, and reputations are lost when people yield to flattering words. What begins with smooth speech can end in lasting devastation. You may feel immune to the lure of sexual sin, yet adultery is subtle and often begins quietly in the heart. Is there someone at the gym, at the office, or down the street who captures your imagination? Do you find yourself escaping the routine of life by entertaining thoughts about someone new and exciting? If so, turn from that path. Repent before the temptation grows stronger. Wisdom’s light will keep you from wandering into darkness.
