Proverbs 7:21-22 (ESV)
21 With much seductive speech she persuades him;
with her smooth talk she compels him.
22 All at once he follows her,
as an ox goes to the slaughter,
or as a stag is caught fast
The adulteress is effective in her ploy. She nets the gullible man into her trap, and he follows her right to her bed. Her seductive words overcome any fear of the Lord he may hold. The father paints a shocking picture of sin’s consequence and describes the man as an ox going to the slaughter. The ox is a strong animal, but because of its lack of sense, the creature will walk right into the place where its lifeblood will be drained from its body. Any sense or wisdom the man may have had was conquered by his desire for pleasure. There are times when we must simply choose to obey God rather than our feelings. If we need to be convinced of why something isn’t for our best rather than trusting “because God said,” we will eventually become ensnared by the same fate when our lusts override our logic.
