Proverbs 17:27-28 (ESV)
27 Whoever restrains his words has knowledge,
and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
28 Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise;
when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.
A woman’s wisdom is revealed by the way she manages her speech. She keeps herself back from responding unwisely, even when provoked. She remains patient, calm, and employs words with extreme self-control. Because the wise have learned the art of controlling their emotions, even the foolish woman can appear discerning when she keeps her mouth shut. When we hear a woman “going off” on a rant or exploding hotly in a difficult situation, we don’t assume her righteousness. When we read people’s social media posts claiming they were wronged or cheated, or subtly yet publicly jabbing at another’s character, our hearts break, and rightfully so. Be careful of what you say and what you post, comment on, or even “like.” The godly woman thinks through the impact of every word, spoken or printed, reflecting her desire to please Jesus and others rather than herself.
