3 Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you;
bind them around your neck;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 So you will find favor and good success
in the sight of God and man.
The father associates his commandments with steadfast love and faithfulness. What a contrast between the way of wisdom and the way of the wicked, characterized by evil and selfishness! The son is not to forget the laws of God. He is to wear the truths he has learned and memorized like a protective necklace, which when put into practice, ward off unrighteousness. He will receive grace in this life and the life to come and be recognized by the community as one with a good reputation. Though we don’t live for the approval of man, it is important that if we are rejected, our rejection not stem from our indulgence in sinful practices. The wise are people of whom others think highly of because of their commitment to virtuous behavior. How would those closest to you describe your character? Why not ask? If there are areas you need to change, then do so today.
