Proverbs 3:1-2 (ESV)
1 My son, do not forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep my commandments,
2 for length of days and years of life
and peace they will add to you.
The father encourages his son not to forget the teaching he has provided him with through the collection of proverbs. Although we learn something, we can “forget” what we know when we choose to live contrary to the teaching we received. If the son holds fast to the words he has memorized and meditated on, his life will be characterized by peace. The life he lives will be honest as he walks in fellowship with the Lord. To live a long life without God can be dark and depressing, but knowing God and communing with him brings peace that surpasses all circumstances. May we never forget that God’s commandments are not burdensome. He doesn’t call us to live in obedience to him to earn our salvation. An obedient life is a gift from God. It is an honor and a privilege to have his commands and to keep them.
