Proverbs 4:1-2 (ESV)
1 Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction,
and be attentive, that you may gain insight,
2 for I give you good precepts;
do not forsake my teaching.
The father addresses his sons. This wisdom was not just for his immediate son, but for his grandsons and great-grandsons and so on. The sons are called to pay attention to his instruction because the father’s teaching provided insight, which enabled the sons to function well in the family, the community, and before the Lord. How are you at listening to the advice of your parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents? God often uses those who have lived longer to impart sound and practical truths to their offspring. Remember to filter the advice you receive through the lens of Scripture, but don’t disregard the wisdom of those who have gone before you. And be prepared to pass the wisdom of the Lord on to your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and even the children of your church. Those who have learned to blend biblical truth with life experience should share that knowledge with others.
