Proverbs 4:10-11 (ESV)

10 Hear, my son, and accept my words,

that the years of your life may be many.

11 I have taught you the way of wisdom;

I have led you in the paths of uprightness.

This passage begins with a call to action. Hear, and accept. The son is not only told to listen, but to receive what he hears in a way that will change his life. Wisdom requires attentive listening and responsive obedience. God’s truth is not given to inform our minds alone, but to direct our lives. Even the gospel demands more than agreement with facts. It calls for repentance and trust. Hearing without obedience leaves wisdom ineffective in one’s life.

The promise follows the command. If the son listens and receives wisdom, his years will be many. Proverbs is not offering a simplistic guarantee of longevity, but a life ordered by wisdom is a life spared from much needless harm, regret, and self destruction. Wisdom protects. Folly shortens life in countless ways.

The father then explains that he has taught the way of wisdom. The Hebrew word translated taught, yarah means to instruct or to point the way. It carries the idea of giving clear direction. Think of a GPS guiding you step by step. To ignore it and insist on your own route would be foolish. How much more absurd to disregard instruction that comes from the Lord himself. If we refuse his guidance, we should not be surprised when we arrive somewhere we never intended to go.

Not only has the father taught, he also leads. He points his son toward the path he should take in life, seeking what is truly best for him. Scripture likewise shows that the Spirit of God leads his people. When we walk by the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control are produced in our lives. We are called to keep in step with him, trusting his direction rather than surrendering to our own foolish or sinful desires.

Listening alone is never enough. Wisdom must be applied. When a woman chooses obedience, her life is full. She may not have the longest life measured in days, but God will fill her life with meaning, usefulness, and spiritual abundance. The paths of uprightness are well worn. God’s people have walked them faithfully for generations. What step of faith have you delayed for weeks, months, or even years? It will not be easier tomorrow than it is today. Now is the time to live out what you already know is right. Let your life show that you are walking the path of wisdom in your thoughts, your choices, and your conduct.
