Proverbs 3:21-22 (ESV)

21 My son, do not lose sight of these—

keep sound wisdom and discretion,

22 and they will be life for your soul

and adornment for your neck.

The father implores his son to take hold of his teachings. Though originally delivered in spoken form, we now have these teachings recorded for our understanding in the pages of Scripture. Not to lose sight requires that we continually give our attention to reading and meditating on God’s words. The priority we give to the teaching of the Lord is worn like a jeweled necklace for all to see. It is an honor to have the instruction that comes directly from God. But the study of God’s word is just the beginning. His teaching is only complete in us when we put it into practice. If we know and give sound advice, we need to follow it ourselves too. Is there any area in which you give great instruction to others, but fail to obey it in your own life? If so, determine to live consistently with what you know to be true.
