Proverbs 31:10-12 (ESV)

10 An excellent wife who can find?

She is far more precious than jewels.

11 The heart of her husband trusts in her,

and he will have no lack of gain.

12 She does him good, and not harm,

all the days of her life.

The Hebrew word translated “excellent,” hayil, is a military term, denoting bravery, strength and might. The question “Who can find her?” challenges the reader to search for and become this type of person. The question reveals that this woman is rare, and her worth is far above costly jewels. This fearless woman is of great value to her husband. He has full confidence in her reliability. Interestingly, the Scripture forbids putting trust in anyone other than the Lord, except here. The godly woman is elevated because she fears the Lord, and so her husband can depend upon her. The Hebrew word for “gain,” shalal, is another military term, describing the spoils of war. Her noble actions are not just for a week, or a month, or even a year; she is an asset to her husband all the days of her life. Let others see you as a woman who believes marriage is for life and for good.
